YOUTH SERVICES
Curbing HIV/AIDS Transmission (CHAT)
CAL-PEP has implemented CHAT, an innovative initiative designed to reduce HIV infection risk among ethnic minority young people who are in alternative educational settings, juvenile detention and/or foster care settings.
HYPECHAT
CAL-PEP has utilized technology and social networking to establish Hypechat and to provide web-based prevention education to increase HIV related knowledge, education and testing participation among high risk youth. CAL-PEP has trained youth peer educators who conduct outreach, promote HIV testing, make presentations and provide web-based communication to reach youth. Web-based communication includes Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, individual blogs and a telephone text line created and maintained by youth peer educators-- to allow youth to engage peer educators in sexual health discussions.
PREVENTION SERVICES
CAL-PEP recruits high risk HIV negative youth to receive social network based HIV testing and risk reduction group sessions. Testing is conducted at youth after school programs, alternative school settings, youth shelters, juvenile justice centers and at venues where foster care youth are present. Youth also receive condoms and STD education.
